Google Voice Actions for Android: How to Use Them

Posted: 13 Aug 2010 03:26 AM PDT

Apart from Google Chrome to Phone, Google also made another announcement i.e new and improved Voice Actions for Android 2.2 Froyo.

Google has updated their voice-recognition tools for Android 2.2 and it now supports not just Search – but pretty much everything in your phone!

Even though our phones do all these new things, the most natural way of interacting with a phone remains what it always has been: speaking. And to that end, we're pleased to introduce Voice Actions for Android. Voice Actions are a series of spoken commands that let you control your phone using your voice. Call businesses and contacts, send texts and email, listen to music, browse the web, and complete common tasks, all just by speaking into your phone.

Speak any of these commands to perform a Voice Action on your phone:

  • send text to [contact] [message]
  • listen to [artist/song/album]
  • call [business]
  • call [contact]
  • send email to [contact] [message]
  • go to [website]
  • note to self [note]
  • navigate to [location/business name]
  • directions to [location/business name]
  • map of [location]

Watch the video demo below for more info on how to use Voice Actions for Android.

If you have an Android 2.2 Froyo phone i.e Nexus One, Droid, HTC Evo etc. there are a few things you need to have in order to fully enjoy the new and updated Voice Action tools:

  • Voice Search (this app includes Voice Actions)
  • Google Search widget
  • music apps (e.g. Pandora, Last.fm, Rdio, mSpot)

Grab them all from the Android Market and give Voice Actions a try!

Google Chrome to Phone Android App is Now Official

Posted: 13 Aug 2010 03:05 AM PDT

Google Chrome to Phone Android app is not new. It has been there for a while now, but yesterday, at a small press conference, Gogole revealed some new features for Android 2.2 (Froyo).

It is a tool to push links/content from your Chrome (desktop) browser to your Android phone.

Gogole Chrome to Phone requires you to install a Chrome extension to send links to your phone. You will also need to install the Google Chrome to phone Android app from the Android Market.

"Say you've looked up an address or driving directions on your desktop. Clicking the extension icon in your browser will push the information to the Google Maps app on your phone. YouTube videos work the same way with the extension. You can also select a phone number on a web page and send it to the dialer on your phone. Selected text can also be automatically copied from your browser and sent to your Android clipboard for later viewing"

TweetDeck for Android Review, Screenshot Tour

TweetDeck for Android is now finally available for download, the official beta release! All you have to do is sign-up for a TweetDeck account and download the free TweetDeck Android app.

I have been playing with the app for the last 15 minutes, and honestly speaking, I like it! Well, there are still many things the app lacks behind in, but I’m sure before the final release hits the Android Market, this app will be just as perfect.

The TweetDeck team has worked a lot in the last few months and looks like their hard work paid off! TweetDeck Android app is way easy on the RAM as compared to Seesmic for Android. UI is very easy to use. Font in the app looks too big, but the big buttons and tabs makes it very easy to use. It’s fast, simple and a full client for Twitetr, Facebook, Google Buzz and Foursquare!

TweetDeck for Android badly needs one most important thing which is, a Settings menu from where we could configure the app as we want it. Other features I feel TweetDeck Android app should have are:

  • Video uploading
  • TwitPic support! (I really need this!)
  • URL shortening
  • Better mapping features
  • Homescreen widget
  • Better multiple accounts handling
  • More options to sort out timeline and columns

As I play more with the app, I’ll soon be adding TweetDeck for Android in my list of 25+ Android Twitter Clients.

TweetDeck for Android is now available for download. TweetDeck Android app is one of the most anticipated Twitter clients ever released for Android.

This app was first announced back in April, then popped up the 20 sec teaser video, soon followed by an early beta build leak.

I’ve been a big fan of Seesmic for Android, I wonder if TweetDeck will make me move on from it. The leaked build looked pretty neat, but had lots of things missing in it. I’m still using the app and checking out the changes made from the leaked version of it.

TweetDeck for Android still gives the feel of a “beta build”, but I’m sure the future beta releases of the app will make it more mature.
