Soon, you'll be afk on AIM forever, plus Netflix has more bad news. All that and more in The Daily Crunch for October 6, 2017. Plus it's podcast Friday which means everyone should be very happy. 1. A Farewell to AIMs AOL Instant Messenger is finally singing its swan song, with plans to shut entirely on December 15, after 20 years in operation. It's a sad time, especially for those of us with fond memories of the messaging app. I remember using it to do some intense Gundam Wing-related online freeform role play, which also resulted in me making some of my first and best online pals, in case you wondered whether I was a nerd or not. Goodnight, sweet yellow prince. 2. Netflix's prices are going up Well this is not what you want: Netflix is raising prices for subscribers again, with the 4K plan raising to $13.99, which is an increase of $2. Netflix knows more people are going to want 4K. But if you're still fine with SD, you can still get the $7.99 plan. 3. Magic Leak's 'accomplishments' so far Hey, if you raise $1.4 billion you're going to be subject to some scrutiny. Which is why it's so amazing that Magic Leap keeps releasing totally weird stuff despite its tremendously high valuation. 4. Blade Runner 2049 is good Hollywood's serious case of 'sequelitis' isn't really a great thing overall, but it actually worked out in the case of Blade Runner 2049, and that's probably because its creative vision wasn't led by someone trying to build a cinematic universe. 5. Facebook launched desktop apps for its Workplace chat app Does anyone use Facebook's Workplace? Josh says some people do but I've never met anyone who does. Anyway they have native desktop apps for PC and Mac. So there's that. 6. Honest Co.'s down round Are people getting tired of family sourced goods? Honest Co. might be finding that's the case, as it looks to be raising a down round. Connie suggests this could be a way to make it more palatable to potential purchasers. 7. Friday? Yes, PODCAST Friday Yep, just in time for the weekend there are new episodes of Equity (linked above) and Original Content. Me an Anthony got to talk about Blade Runner 2049 and more Star Trek: Discovery so it's basically the best week ever. |
