Microsoft has been slowly unveiling details about its upcoming smartphone operating system, the Windows Mobile 7. Yesterday, it announced that all Microsoft employees will be getting free Windows Mobile 7 smartphones and today announced the names of the hardware partners which will be launching Windows Mobile 7 on their smartphone platforms.
Greg Sullivan, senior product manager for Microsoft, while talking to online weblog Pocket-Lint stated that smartphones from Dell, Asus, LG, HTC, and Samsung will be coming out with Windows Mobile 7 when it is launched later this year. Dell would be launching its Windows Mobile 7 based device, Dell Lightning. Along with that, Mr. Sillivan also hinted that LG will also be releasing a renamed Panther running on Microsoft's latest mobile operating system. With Samsung and HTC also confirm launching smartphones, things are look steady for Windows Mobile 7. Furthermore, the product manager of Microsoft also stressed that Microsoft will not be limiting its new operating system to just a few carriers in the US and the UK. “We want as many people as possible to be able to get it”, Sullivan told Pocket-lint. He also said that Microsoft will be providing features which are the best of the best with Windows Mobile 7. “We will offer the best aspects of Android and the best of the iPhone, giving users the flexibility of different form factors, but with the rigidity of apps that are guaranteed to work on every device that is out there. By the time we will launch, we won’t have to worry about stealing customers from other operating systems, there will a new wave of smartphone users to embrace for us to still be successful”. Nokia X6, the phone that was announced back at the Nokia World 2009, is the first Nokia touchscreen phone with a capacitive screen. Nokia had previously released several touchscreen models, but they all had resistive screens. I have had the phone since a few days and now decided to do a review on what this Nokia multimedia powerhouse is actually like. It is powered by Symbian 5th edition and comes in two flavours, 16GB and 32GB models. I have Nokia X6-00 (16GB black) model.

Now let’s take a closer look at these features and how they actually perform on the Nokia X6. DisplayNokia X6 is the first Nokia phone to offer capacitive touchscreen display. Well, capacitive is what Nokia says, but honestly, this is not the best of capacitive screens I’ve seen. It skips a lot and at some places it uses double tap and single at some. The screen is bright and is fine to use during sunlight. It offers the standard on-screen keyboard (QWERTY only in landscape mode) and typing on Nokia X6 gave no issues.
The OS offers three homescreen modes that you can use and customize according to your needs. Widget support like in the Nokia N97 and N97 mini would have made it better! The 16:9 widescreen display is optimized for watching photos and videos, which is something it did well. ProcessorIt is powered by the ARM 11 434 MHz processor, which is, pretty slow when compared to other smartphones of its era i.e Motorola Droid, Nokia E72 etc. A 600 MHz should have been put in this device. I have no idea why, but Nokia has been pushing the ARM 11 CPUs in all it’s phones! It is very old and needs a major refresh with something new and much faster. Just fill the Nokia X6 with several hundred photos and music files, and watch how life becomes hell when using this phone. I first experienced this issue with my Nokia N96, which is now kept somewhere deep inside my cupboard. CameraNokia X6 features a 5 megapixels camera with Carl Zeiss optics and also a front-facing secondary camera for video calling. At the back, next to the 5MP camera, there is a dual LED flash too.
The 5 megapixels camera of Nokia X6 takes mediocre photos, where sometimes the colours look washed out! My Nokia N96 with a 5megapixels camera takes way better photos, and when compared with the Nokia E72, even that 5 megapixels camera beats Nokia X6’s. VideoVideos recorded from the Nokia X6 are at 30 FPS (VGA resolution). Just like the photos taken from it, the video quality is not very good and colours look washed out. Memory128MB RAM, seriously Nokia? Even the low end smartphones now come with at least 256MB of RAM. This could be the main reason why Nokia X6 is slow, sluggish and failed to do good at sales. Nokia X6 comes in two flavours, 16GB and 32GB models. No memory card slot for additional memory. ConnectivityNokia X6 offers several connectivity options such as Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, WiFi and microUSB support. Direct TV output is also included which is one useful feature for viewing photos and videos on your TV. Unfortuanetely, the TV out cable is not included in the box. I used the cable that came with my Nokia N96 to try out! BatteryThis phone is powered by 1320 mAh Li Ion battery which gives about 16 days stand-by time and 35 hours music playback. But when actually in the hands of a heavy user like me, the battery lasted only 7-8 hours with web-browsing, music and Gravity (Twitter app) running.
