The Daily Crunch 09/07/16

Apple will dominate the day, and there's absolutely nothing you can do about it, so relax and enjoy the iPhones. All that and more in The Daily Crunch for September 7, 2016. And if you want to understand Facebook's News Feed, I want to understand you.

1. Apple is inescapable today

Apple's big fall event is today at 10 AM PT (1 PM ET) and there's no escaping it so why bother trying? You can watch it live via the link above, but you can also check out the live blog from TechCrunch, where Greg and co. have already started typing.

The live blog is the quieter, more work environment-friendly way to watch as Apple unveils the iPhone 7, and probably an Apple Watch 2 as well as who knows what else.

2. Cyber warfare makes Obama mad

The next arms race could be fought with 1s and 0s, and both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton are weighing in on how best to approach the situation, with calls to talk about cyber attacks at an international level to avoid the kind of rapidly ramping escalation that could end up with state-sponsored hacking going totally bonkers.

3. Mercedes built a drone-launching concept van

For some reason when I see this new collaboration concept vehicle created by Mercedes-Benz's commercial vehicle unit and Matternet, I think of the Wicked Witch's army of flying monkeys from the Wizard of Oz. These monkeys are Matternet M2 drones, though, which can operate autonomously and deliver packages of up to 4.4 pounds up to 12 miles. The idea is that the van gets you close, and then the drones finish the courier job. Fly, my pretties!

4. Postmates is raising

One of the most quintessentially San Francisco startups out there is raising again: Postmates, which will deliver you nearly whatever your lazy heart desires, including some chips from the corner store down the block, is in the process of raising at least $100 million in a round led by Founders Fund, TechCrunch's Katie Roof and Matthew Lynley have discovered. It's not yet closed, but it should give the on-demand delivery startup a considerable boost when and if it does.

5. Amazon is doing food delivery in London

Anytime Amazon enters your line of business, that's gotta be worrying. European startups including Deliveroo who have had a relatively clear field of operation until now are going to have to contend with the e-commerce giant starting now, since Amazon is making restaurant delivery available via Prime, with free delivery for orders of £15.00 or more. That's the first international market for the service, which began in Seattle last year and now extends to twelve U.S. cities in total.

6. Dell now owns EMC

Dell is getting some more enterprise chops with the $67 billion purchase of EMC, which official closed today. The record-breaking deal brings VMware to Dell, but makes EMC itself a private wholly owned subsidiary. EMC's data storage, infused, virtualization and cloud products should complement Dell's existing business well, provided the computer maker can arrange a harmonious integration between the two for customers.
