Interesting Android 2011 Statistics Shared at Google I/O 2011

Posted: 10 May 2011 12:10 PM PDT

Just more than two and a half years ago, Google introduced Android, the mobile OS from Google that will soon be taking over the world – and it really is! Android was launched with the first developer phone, T-Mobile G1, manufactured by HTC. This was in one country, on one carrier.

Google now has an entire Android ecosystem, thanks to all the manufacturers, developers and carriers it has on board. Android is growing at an amazing rate. This is not all.

A few stats were shared a while ago at the first day of Google I/O 2011, where Android Ice Cream Sandwich, Honeycomb 3.1 for tablets, Google Movies for Android, Music Beta by Google and several other announcements were unveiled.

Android stats so far are:

  • 100 million activated Android devices
  • 400,000 new Android devices activated every day
  • 200,000 free and paid applications available in Android Market
  • 4.5 billion applications installed from Android Market

This is simply a big wow for a platform that was launched less than 3 years ago. Google is on its way to take over the entire mobile market, and in the not too distant future, Android would soon be available on every electronic item we use.

How? Android is already on mobile phones, tablets, netbooks, TVs etc. It is open-source, and with the help of projects like Android @ Home, Android will be available in what more devices in the future. We just have to wait and see.

If you’re a developer, any plans on how you plan to use Android APIs to create something amazing, or as a consumer, in what area would you like Android to take over next?

Android Ice Cream Sandwich: One OS Everywhere

Posted: 10 May 2011 11:14 AM PDT

This is it. One OS everywhere Ice Cream Sandwich. Google is finally trying to put an end to all the fragmentation issue with all the Android devices. According to Google, “We want one OS that runs everywhere.”

Ice Cream Sandwich will state of the art (holographic) UI, richer widgets, advanced app framework etc. This will be the one OS that will run on phones, tablets, laptops, computers etc. We think, this all to battle down Android fragmentation.

Google will be rolling out Ice Cream Sandwich some where in Q4, no definite dates given and for what devices it will be available first. Android 3.1 for tablets will be rolling out in the coming few weeks for Verizon, to be the first. Motorola XOOM and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 will probably be the first devices to get Honeycomb 3.1.

Google Music to be Announced at Google I/O 2011

Posted: 10 May 2011 08:40 AM PDT

Google Music is expected to launch today at Google I/O 2011. Last year, Google demoed what Google Music (your music on the cloud) would be like, but due to several issues, they would be launching Google Music this year at #io2011.

Music server by Google took many hiccups in the past several months with music labels not signing up with Google, but this didn’t stop Google from not offering the Google Music service for Android users.

Google will announce Google Music today, on the first day of Google I/O 2011 event – WSJ reports. After digging depeer into this, AllThingsD have found a few more details about the Google Music service that Google will be offering.

This service will allow users to upload their music on Google Music and later stream it on their Android phone from anywhere, anyplace with an Internet connection. Google Music will allow you to upload 20,000 songs, unlike Amazon Cloud-Based Music Hosting that only allows you to store 2,000 songs online.

No details on the pricing yet, but our guess is that this service will be available for free. Google will probably charge more for storing more than 20,000 songs online. Google Music will launch as an invite-only beta service for selected users.

We’ll update as more details get in and Google Music goes official at the Google I/O 2011 event.
