THE DAILY CRUNCH
THURSDAY, AUGUST 2 2018 By Anthony Ha

Cisco buys Duo, Apple ends its affiliate program and Musical.ly is kinda, sorta going away. Here's your Daily Crunch for August 2, 2018,

1. Cisco is buying Duo Security for $2.35B in cash

Duo's security tools allow employees use their own devices for authentication. As part of Cisco, Duo could win over even more CTOs looking for a secure two-factor approach.

Following the acquisition, co-founder and CEO Dug Song will continue leading Duo while also joining Cisco's networking and security business. He said this provides "a unique opportunity to drive change at a massive scale, and reshape the industry."

2. Apple is ending its App Store Affiliate Program in October

The program previously allowed individuals, blogs, YouTubers and others to link to an app and earn a small cut (2.5 percent, as of April of last year) of the sale if a purchase was made. As of October 1, it's gone completely.

3. Microsoft Surface Go review

It sounds like the Surface Go isn't an amazing device, but Brian Heater says it adds something low cost and portable to the Windows 10 lineup.

4. There's more: Google is also said to be developing a censored news app for China

The Information, which earlier reported that Google is working on a censored search engine for China, has a new story saying the company is also developing a government-friendly news app.

5. PSA: Automatic cross-posting of tweets to Facebook no longer works as of today

Moving forward, if anyone (including certain TechCrunch editors) wants to share their tweets on Facebook, they'll have to manually copy the link over.

6. WhatsApp finally earns money by charging businesses for slow replies

This is the first time WhatsApp has made money directly from the app.

7. Short video service Musical.ly is merging into sister app TikTok

Users of Musical.ly will see their app switch to TikTok once they update, and they should find their account, videos and personal settings inside the new app as per usual.
