THE DAILY CRUNCH
MONDAY, OCTOBER 29 2018 By Anthony Ha

IBM is buying Red Hat, Twitter is not removing its Like button (yet) and Red is selling a big, expensive phone. Here's your Daily Crunch for October 29, 2018.

1. IBM to buy Red Hat for $34B in cash and debt, taking a bigger leap into hybrid cloud

The deal is all about IBM taking a bigger bet on the cloud, and very specifically cloud services that blend on-premises and cloud-based architectures — something that the two companies have already been working on together since May.

IBM said the acquisition has already been approved by the IBM and Red Hat boards, but is still subject to Red Hat shareholder and regulatory approvals. If all goes as planned, it's expected to close in the latter half of 2019.

2. No, Twitter is not removing its Like button 'soon', but it is considering it

In response to a story reporting that it would "soon" remove the Like button, the company said it's been "considering" a move like this — but there's no timeline, and it's not happening in the near future.

3. The Red Hydrogen One phone exists — but should it?

As described by Brian Heater, the new phone from Red is big and bold and bizarre. Oh, and pricing starts at $1,299.

4. Walmart's test store for new technology, Sam's Club Now, opens next week in Dallas

The retailer will test out new concepts like mobile checkout, an Amazon Go-like camera system for inventory management, electronic shelf labels, wayfinding technology for in-store navigation, augmented reality and AI-infused shopping.

5. Here are the 20 games shipping with the PlayStation Classic

The list includes "Final Fantasy VII," "Grand Theft Auto" and "Metal Gear Solid."

6. DJI releases a modified Mavic 2 drone aimed at enterprise

The base of the folding drone is the same as the commercial one that launched a few months back, but there are a few updates on-board aimed specifically at enterprise customers.

7. Another week, another set of TechCrunch podcasts

This week, we've got another Equity episode about market turmoil, plus two Original Content episodes about (respectively) "Hold the Dark" and "The Haunting of Hill House." Best of all, after taking a few weeks off, TechCrunch Mixtape is back with a discussion of Super Mario Party!

THE DAILY CRUNCH
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26 2018 By Anthony Ha

Google weighs in on sexual harassment concerns, the company behind Fortnite raises a huge funding round and we lay out what to expect at next week's Apple event. Here's your Daily Crunch for October 26, 2018.

1. Google terminated 48 employees for sexual harassment in the last two years

Yesterday, The New York Times published a bombshell story about Google's payout to Andy Rubin following reports of sexual misconduct by the Android creator. (Rubin described these as "false allegations" that are "part of a smear campaign.")

In the wake of the piece, CEO Sundar Pichai and VP People Operations Eileen Naughton co-signed a memo sent to Google staff detailing what it says is "an increasingly hard line on inappropriate conduct by people in positions of authority."

2. Epic Games, the creator of Fortnite, raises $1.25 billion

It pays to have the most popular game in the world.

3. What to expect from Apple's iPad event

A new iPad Pro is all but a given at this point. There are also rumors of an iPad Mini 5 and the long-awaited arrival of AirPower.

4. Microsoft closes its $7.5B purchase of code-sharing platform GitHub

The acquisition is yet another sign of how Microsoft has been doubling down on courting developers and presenting itself as a neutral partner.

5. Snapchat loses 2M more users in Q3 as shares sink to new low

User count is still up 5 percent year-over-year, though.

6. More than half of crypto news sites are pay-for-play

That's according to some sleuthing by Corin Faife at Breaker. (To be clear: Attempting to bribe journalists is nothing new, but what's shocking is the large number of crypto publications that seem to be willing to go along.)

7. Chat fiction startup Hooked unveils 'Dark Matter,' its first feature-length thriller

The story debuts today on Snapchat, with a new chapter coming out every day until Tuesday, October 30. According to CEO Prerna Gupta, the full script totals 32,000 words — in other words, it's the length of a feature film script or short novel.
